For thousands of years, glass has been made from natural elements which the earth has provided.
Craftsmen, and women, have traditionally produced functional glassware and in turn artists have created masterpieces that capture our imaginations with each unique piece of work.
The artistry of glass blowing has translated well to our Bermudian studio, and is an art form which has been well established in Bermuda for over 26 years. The business Dockyard Glassworks first opened its’ doors on July 4th 1999.
Dockyard Glassworks is owned by Wendy Avery and her son Alan J. Avery; who is a glass artist and trainer. Our production team is wholly Bermudian and we have a 5 Year Apprenticeship Program which has been running in Bermuda since 1987.
We employ experienced glass artists locally. Guest artists from around the world often come to support our apprentices with additional motivation throughout their training. Each of our glass pieces is hand crafted in our studio using blown, sculptured and torch worked techniques. The result can be seen on our production floor showcasing fine examples of the wealth of talent and creative flare which is pooled from our vibrant island based community.
The Bermuda Rum Cake Company
In the Caribbean there has always been variations of black rum cakes throughout history. We believe they may have begun as plain hard sea biscuits dunked in the daily Naval regulation “tot” of black rum.
Other rumors contribute its development as a heavily fruited dark rum cake in a steamed pudding form. Regardless of the origins a Rum Cake evokes the sense of a deliciously dense confection dotted with fruit and soaked in a variety of alcohols like Madeira, sherry, cognac and whisky.
Our custom Bermuda cottage style bakery was built inside the historical machine shop in the Royal Naval Dockyard of Bermuda. And the bakery shares the building with Dockyard Glassworks. All our cakes are produced here in our micro-bakery and only the finest Bermuda Gosling’s Black Seal Rum is used in them. Once baked they are stored in heat sealed packaging for maximum freshness.
Our glass blowing roots have long been invested in the historic site of Saint Georges, Bermuda. Further blossoming into our very own gift gallery on the cobble stoned pathway of Water Street.
Bermuda Memories features our signature rum cakes, glass sculptures and a range of Bermuda inspired art that you can take home as your very own Bermuda memory.
Our talented flame work artists from the Dockyard studio often appear alongside the creative-cornucopia available in Bermuda Memories, to create something truly special for our visitors. We carry a full selection of our hand blown glass and specialty rum cakes, in addition to the handcrafted works of several Bermudian Artists.
